The week of July 8-12, a group of Zion volunteers worked on a Habitat for Humantiy rehab house located in Columbia Heights. The first part of the project involved organizing the garage and setting up the tools for the week. Demolitian was done in the bathroom and kitchen, hauling out the appliances, cabinets, and vanity. Next, in preparation for painting, the floor was covered, face plates removed and painters tape applied to the trim. Insulation was also added to the basement’s exterior walls. Another team worked outside to strip the old siding off the garage, and once done, the garage was housewrapped and ready to be sided.
As the week progressed, three new exterior doors were installed. The inside of the house was prepped for paint by spackling walls and applying two coats of paint on the ceiling. Once the bathroom was fully demolished, insulation and plastic were added to the exterior walls. Because of the experience level of the workers, the garage and its sagging walls were also addressed. At the end of the week, the team split into half, with one group focusing on siding the garage exterior walls and the other group working on straightening the walls from the inside by racheting them back into place and erecting beams to hold everything together.
Looking back on the week, the experienced crew worked very well together, accomplished a lot and left the house in a great place for the next crew.
Thank you to the construction workers and those who brought in food each day. Many hands made the work light!
